How many boxes fit on a pallet?

Boxes per layer depends on the usable pallet length and width, the packed outside box dimensions, spacing and edge clearance. Layers high depends on the available load height divided by the upright box height.
Area division alone is not enough. A leftover strip may have plenty of square inches but still be too narrow for another complete box.
Example: 16 × 12 × 12 inch boxes.
On a 48 × 40 inch pallet, a simple 3 × 3 layout fits nine boxes per layer. If the pallet is 6 inches high and the maximum total height is 72 inches, 66 inches remain for the load. Five complete 12-inch layers fit, giving an estimate of 45 boxes per pallet.
- Confirm the usable pallet deck: 48 × 40 in.
- Measure the packed box: 16 × 12 × 12 in.
- Calculate nine boxes per layer.
- Calculate five complete layers.
- Multiply 9 × 5 = 45 boxes.
What can reduce the real quantity?
Payload, compression strength, humidity, overhang rules, stability, wrapping, corner boards, required gaps and receiving equipment can all reduce the practical count. Treat the geometric result as a planning estimate and verify the finished load.

Can I calculate boxes per pallet using area alone?
No. Dividing pallet area by box area can overstate the result because complete rectangular boxes must fit along both pallet edges. Test actual row and column orientations.
Should pallet height be included in the height limit?
Usually the total allowed height includes the pallet base, but carrier and receiver rules vary. Confirm the definition used for your shipment.
Can boxes be turned on the pallet?
Boxes can usually turn 90 degrees on the pallet deck while remaining upright. Whether they may be laid on another face depends on the product and packaging.
